Sevagram

Sevagram is a small village, situated at the distance of 8 Km from Wardha. Mahatma Gandhi Ji set up his Ashram in the outer reaches of the village where only a thousand people lived.

The first rural medical college was established in Sevegram, which was named as the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences. Not only this, an engineering college ‘Sevagram College of Engineering’ which was later named ‘Bapurao Deshmukh College of Engineering’ was also established and is run by a rural trust. Many students come to these colleges for higher education.

Places to Visit Near TATR – Anandwan is located around 5 kilometers from Warora in Chandrapur district in state of Maharashtra India, this is an ashram & community rehabilitation centre which was mainly started for leprosy patients and he disabled from downtrodden sections of society.A standing example of selfless humility and charity, Anandwan stands for the efforts of one man, Baba Amte. Translating to mean ‘The Forest of Joy’, It was founded in 1952 by noted social activist Baba Amte. The project is run by the organisationMaharogiSeva Samiti.

Two of its other projects are Lok biradriprakalp& Somnath a village for cured leprosy patients. Baba Amte also shaped Anandwan as an environmentally aware community to practice energy utilization, waste recycling and minimizing use of natural resources that might otherwise lead to their depletion. Anandwan today has two hospitals, a college, an orphanage, a school for the blind, a school for the deaf and a technical wing. Dr. VikasAmte BabaAmte’s elder son, is the chief functionary at Anandwan. He undertook various experiments in Anandwan regarding rehabilitation which have been mentioned in a book titled ‘Anandwan Prayogwan’.

Hemalkasa on the other hand in located in Gadchiroli district and belongs to the MadiaGonds, a tribal community. It was here that Baba Amte and His wife, Dr. MandakiniAmte managed the award winning project of Lok Biradari.

In 1973, Dr baba Amte, a man who devoted his life for humanity moved to Hemalkasa to start the Lok Biradari Prakalp, a project for the development of tribal people, most of whom were the Madia Gond in the forests of Gadchiroli district.He lived and worked there for almost twenty years performing emergency surgical procedures without electricity. The project transformed into a hospital, Lok Biradari Prakalp Davakhana, a residential school, Lok Biradari Prakalp Ashram Shala, and an orphanage for injured wild animals, the Amte’s Animal Park is a must visit place to understand what a human can contribute for the wildlife. The project provides health care to about 40000 individuals annually. The Lok Biradari Prakalp Ashram School has over 600 students, residents and day scholars.

Under this project they have multiple programs to help local tribal community known as Madiya.

So timing for Amte’s Animal Ark is 8.30 AM to 12 PM in morning and 2 PM to 5 PM in afternoon.

During this time we can visit Amte’s Award Gallery and shop which sells multiple Bamboo products created by tribal people. Also various books written on Amte family.
